You’re settling down in front of the TV, ready to binge-watch all your favorite shows, but you’re greeted with nothing but static and snow as soon as you turn it on. That’s not exactly the outcome you were hoping for, and it probably means that there’s something wrong with your Sony TV.
Luckily, if you follow these seven simple steps, you’ll be back up and running in no time!
Why is my Sony TV says “No Signal”?
Generally, a “no signal” message on a Sony TV can appear for various reasons. One of them is a loose antenna connection. On the other hand, faulty source devices, loose cable connections, service providers, or outdated firmware can also lead to this problem.
However, these are the primary reasons your TV doesn’t have a signal.
- The TV is not turned on.
- The TV is on, but the input channel is not set correctly.
- The TV is on, but the cable box or satellite box is not turned on.
- The TV is on, but the cable box or satellite box is not set to the correct input channel.
- The TV is on, but the cable box or satellite box is not properly connected to the TV.
- The TV is on, but the antenna or cable is not properly connected to the TV.
- The TV is on, but the signal strength is too low.
- The TV is on, but the signal is being interrupted by interference.
Fixing the Sony TV No Signal issue
In short: To troubleshoot the “no signal” issue on your Sony TV, ensure that all of your connections are secure and tight. If you’re using an HDMI cable, try unplugging it and plugging it back in. But if you’re using an antenna, check to ensure it’s properly connected to your TV. If nothing works, factory reset your TV.

Step 1: Check the Antenna cable connection.
A loose antenna cable connection may cause this no-signal issue in most cases. Sometimes your antenna or cable is just not connected properly. So, before you do anything else:
- Make sure your antenna is securely connected. The antenna jack may be on your television’s side or back panel.
- If there’s no visible port labeled antenna, check your owner’s manual or look around your television for a cable or cord that leads out of it.
- Remove and replace any cables that have been dislodged during recent use or storms.
Moreover, ensure that your antenna cable is plugged in firmly and at both ends of the connection.
Step 2: Check and Unplug all the cables.
Sometimes, simply unplugging and replugging all your cables will fix whatever issue you have. It may seem sound silly, but it works most of the time.
Try unplugging every TV cable (inputs and outputs), wait a few seconds, then plug them back in. If your problem persists or you can’t find your solution, move on to the next step.
Step 3: Change the channel or try a different source or device.
These seem obvious solutions, but you’d be surprised how often people skip right over them. Sometimes your issue is not a problem with your receiver or cable box; it could just be a problem with your television’s channel selection.
However, if your source is set to cable or satellite, switch it and see if that changes anything. Or, try a different input device, like a Blu-ray player or game console. In some cases, you may need to restart your television to recognize these devices after making these switches.
Ensure that your devices are powered on and working correctly before testing them with your TV.
Step 4: Ensure that the source device is working properly
There is also a possible problem with your source device, not your television.
So, check that your source device is working correctly by connecting it to another television or different input on your current set. If you can usually play content, you know it’s not an issue with your TV, and you need to troubleshoot your source device.
Step 5: Try using the Auto program feature
Sometimes your television needs to be re-programmed. Adjusting a few settings on your remote control can fix your problem. The Auto Program feature on Sony televisions is designed to automatically change specific settings and typically fixes the signal issue within one or two attempts. To do that,
- Press the “Home” button on your remote control.
- Select “Settings.”
- Now choose Channels > Channel setup.
- After that, you’ll see two options: “Cable” and “Antenna.” Select the appropriate signal type for your connection.
- Finally, select “Auto Program.”
You should see a message that says, “Scanning for channels… Please wait until complete”. Once the scanning is done, use your arrow buttons to select Exit Auto Program Mode. Press OK again and then press your power button to turn off your TV.
In terms of auto-programming methods, each television is unique. The processes and terminology for your model may differ from those in the above guide. You will find everything about the auto-program feature in the manuals.
Step 6: Factory reset your Sony TV to fix the no-signal issue
Another effective way to fix the signal issue is to reset your TV to its factory setting. Sometimes, resetting will fix the software-related bug on your TV and help it run smoothly. To reset your TV,
- Press the Home button on your remote control.
- Go to Settings.
- Under Storage & Reset, select Factory data reset.
- Choose Erase everything.
- Finally, confirm by selecting Yes.
But remember that resetting the TV to its factory setting will delete all downloaded apps, content, saved info, and settings.
Step 7: Update the TV’s Firmware
If none of the above methods work, check if the TV has installed the latest firmware. If not, update your Sony Smart TV. To check and update your TV:
- First, go to “Settings. “
- Then click on “Customer Support/Setup/Product Support.”
- Now select “Software Update.”
- Finally, press “Network.”
If a software update is available, install it. Once installed, turn on your TV and check for signals again.
Don’t power off your TV or unplug it from the power outlet during the update process. Interrupting the update process may cause your TV to become unresponsive or require repair.
Q. My Sony TV says no signal, but everything is plugged in
If you’re seeing a “no signal” error on your Sony TV, but everything is plugged in, your TV is not receiving any input from your HDMI sources. Check that your HDMI cables are securely plugged into your TV and HDMI source devices.
If you’re using an HDMI splitter, make sure it’s plugged in and powered on. It’s also possible that there may be an issue with your HDMI source devices or your TV’s HDMI ports.
Try unplugging and replugging all of your HDMI cables and devices. If that doesn’t work, try resetting your TV by unplugging it from the power outlet for 30 seconds.
Q. My Sony TV says “no input detected”
If your Sony TV is displaying the “No input detected” message and advises you to check the external input, it means that it’s not receiving input from your HDMI source. There are a few things you can do to fix this issue:
- Check that all of your HDMI cables are properly plugged in.
- If you’re using an HDMI splitter, make sure that it’s properly connected.
- Check your HDMI source (e.g. Blu-ray player, cable box, etc.) to see if it’s turned on and set to the correct input.
- Try a different HDMI cable.
If you’re still experiencing the issue, you may need to factory reset your Sony TV.
